Thank my Lucky Stars for your Dad

Last weekend was Tia Nenas Bday and we went out for a yummy meal. We planned to go early so that it would not conflict with Julis nap time...

Ahh the best laid plans... are laughed at by toddlers...
She fell asleep in the car on the way there and ended up having her nap on a couple of chairs pulled together.

Como dicen no hay mal que por bien no venga and we ended up enjoying a quiet and delicious meal.

Of course she woke up just in time for the cake.
Call it toddler "cakedar"

Last weekend was also fathers day, so between soccer games, we squeezed in a trip to La Paz Waterfalls.  The park has improved much since the Cinchona earthquake and it is a best practice in terms of how it cares and shows butterflies, monkeys, frogs, pumas, ponies and others. It was another chance to witness how the wonder of children is as contagious as a yawn, for which I am grateful today.

There is an open cage where lots of toucans roam. It is cool to feel them fly right by you.

A number of different varieties of hummingbirds which can reach the amazing speed of 45 miles per hour.

A kiss that can melt hearts at 100 miles per second ;P

Riding in the back of a traditional ox cart: all smiles except Julis, who wasn't sure about the oxen harmlessness.

Gorgeous sites

Tio Rene spent the weekend with us. He always finds time to spend one on one with Julis which she really enjoys.

On a related note: last week I spent all week on a business trip which was heart wrenching for me. Thankfully, not so for Julis who stayed home with Tito who is a very capable Dad, just as likely to shell out fun as he is to ensure reasonable consequences follow unacceptable behavior, can play with dirt and dolls, can cook up a storm and put together a cute outfit. Really, the only thing that makes his knees shake is the thought of ponytails (luckily Julis likes hats).    Today, I am grateful for his support and for the time they are able to share together (without meddling mom!).

Hope everyone had a great fathers day!

Imaginary Friend*

* Imaginary Friend: pretend character often created by children to provide comfort in times of stress, companionship when they're lonely, someone to boss around when they feel powerless, and someone to blame for the decapitated hamster floating in the toilet. Most important, an imaginary companion is a tool young children use to help them make sense of the adult world.

This week Julis introduced us to her new friend Kix.
Kix is invisible or as Julia likes to say it “de mentiritas”. Kix is a female and Juli describes her as “a veces mi amiga, a veces mi mama”, immediately after hearing this, I hear my heart break in a thousand little pieces!
You see, I have been back to work full time since June 1st and Tito was away travelling this past week, ergo: Kix. For what we have been able to see so far, Kix is really good to Julis which is certianly a relief and curiously we did not hear anything about Kix during the weekend.

In any case we have no pictures of Kix to share (for obvious reasons) so here are a few others documenting other weekly happenings.

Julis went swimming at the Abuelos house.

Jumped right in in spite of the freezing water

The abuelos had a tougher time getting in  ;)

still they persevered and eventually found the strength to do so.

She truly enjoys the whole pool thing

And stayed in until her lips turned purple

A nice warm shower complimented by the possibility of some creativity thanks to some food coloring over ice cubes.

So as my guilt settles in I have to say that I am grateful Julia has some resources of her own to deal with the changing circumstances at our household. So welcome Kix, hope your stay with us is a happy one.

Bedtime and a new Family member

You have been in a toddler bed (converted crib) since October of last year when your dad was simply bored and decided (unilaterally) that converting the crib into a bed, while mom was travelling, would be a fun project (Dad posted about it here).

A few weeks back, the bilateral decision making part of bed transitioning was again pre empted, this time by the simple fact that since Oct you have grown over 4 cm, something that was painfully (and a little funnily) obvious when I walked into your bedroom and saw this...

Yep, you are completely asleep!

Realizing this bed was no longer a decent fit, we set out to find a standard size bed that you would like. We visited many stores and at each one as soon as you saw a bed that appeared interesting, you took off your shoes and hopped on to try it out.  Eventually, we decided to have one made and here it is...

The new bed has changed the geography of your room,

to which you have adapted quite well

You also have adapted beautifully to sleeping with more room to move.

So here´s to one more milestone to celebrate :)

This weekend we also visited Fio and Mau, to happily meet Amelia who was born just last week.

You were very excited to meet and play with her. Plus, she is the first baby you are able to carry at such a tender age.

Dad and Abuelita Vera helped you out the first time and I have to say you were quite in awe.

You tried it a couple of times more and were very surprised she would not play with the rattle you picked out for her.

Seeing your level of interest and tenderness is very encouraging to us.

Today I am grateful for one more sign that you are growing up and that we were able to welcome a beautiful new member to our family.
